With MLK Day this week, we’ve been thinking a lot about empathy. It’s something there doesn’t always seem to be a lot of in the world lately but we can do much to bring it forth. With leadership, there are a few ways empathy was seen in someone like Martin Luther King, Jr.
Discovery: being curious about who you are and how the experiences of others impact you and your community can help bring empathy.
Vulnerability: when we are vulnerable, we are open to the feelings, input, love and kindness of others. This builds empathy for both parties.
Challenge Prejudice: what are your preconceptions? How do you evaluate and judge others? Being aware of how they govern your actions is a way of showing empathy. Instead, what do you have in common with the other person?
